First Class Lounge on the 'Empress of Asia' (1913)
Interior of the passenger liner 'Empress of Asia' (1913) showing the First Class Lounge, on the Promenade Deck (a view from the port side, looking towards the fireplace at the forward end). The central area under the glass dome is shown in detail.
The First Class Lounge was decorated in the Georgian style. The oak panelling with antique finish was installed by W. & E. Thornton-Smith, London. The overdoors were painted by Gerard Chowne (1875-1917) and Charles Maresco Pearce (1874-1964). The main public rooms on the 'Empress of Asia' were designed by the architect George Abraham Crawley (1864-1926). Crawley also designed interiors for her sistership ‘Empress of Russia’ (1913).
