British War Medal 1914-18
Awarded to Henry Ebenezer Mottram (1886-1968). Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18': Engraved on the edge: 'M.B 285 H.E. MOTTRAM. C.M.M. R.N.V.R.' Fitted with a bar and orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes.
Henry Ebenezer Mottram joined the Royal Navy on 18 July 1905 as a Stoker 2nd class. He was rated Stoker from 16 December 1905 but was invalided out of the Navy on 10 December 1908 due to an ear infection. Subsequently he joined the RNVR (RN Motor Boat Reserve) on 15 Feb 1915 as Chief Motor Boatman. He was promoted Chief Motor Mechanic on 1 Aug 1916 and was demobilised 27 Feb 1919. Before and after his naval service he worked as a chauffeur.
