Victory Medal 1914-18
Awarded to Surgeon Vice-Admiral Robert William Basil Hall KCB, OBE (1876-1951). Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION. 1914-1919'. Inscription on edge: 'SURG. COMMR. R.W.B. HALL. R.N.' Fitted with a ring and watered silk ribbon of rainbow hues. On a bar with five other medals.
Robert William Basil Hall was born in Portsmouth the son of Robert Hall RN. He trained in medicine at Guy's Hospital, qualifying in 1900. He served in the Royal Navy throughout his career being promoted Staff Surgeon in 1908 and Fleet Surgeon in 1916. During World War I, he was medical officer in the cruiser 'Lowestoft' during the Dogger Bank action and other operations in the North Sea. From 1917 he was senior medical officer at Forth Blockhouse - the home of the Royal Submarine Service. From 1929 he was in charge of Haslar Hospital later transferring to Plymouth. During the 1930's he was Medical Director General of the Navy and Honorary Physician to George V from 1934-37. He was awarded the OBE in 1924 and the KCB in 1936. He retired in 1937.
