British War Medal 1914-18
Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18': Engraved on the edge: 'FRANCIS C.WILSON'. Suspended from a straight clasp, ribbon missing.
Francis Charles Wilson (1881-1918) was born in Kingston upon Hull, and after being educated at Trinity house School, went to sea aged fifteen. Wilson was one of only three men saved when SS 'Dido' (Ellerman-Wilson Line) sank off the Humber after hitting a mine on 26 February 1916. She was en-route to India. Twenty-eight lives were lost. He was presumed drowned on 23 December 1918 when the SS 'Gitano' posted missing with all hands off Flamborough Head.
