1914-15 Star

Awarded to Charles Arthur Marriott (1892-1980). A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.'. An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G'. with a 'V' within it. Inscription Reverse: 'ENGR C.A.MARRIOTT M.F.A.' Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon. In original box of issue, inscribed '1914-15 Star Engr C.A. Marriott M.F.A.'

Charles Arthur Marriott was born in Ilford, London. During World War I, he worked for the General Steam Navigation Company, London as an engineer in 'Albatross', 'Redstart', 'Mallard' and 'Laverock'. Before he joined 'Leeuwarden', she was sunk by 'U-28' on 17 March 1915 - her crew survived. After the war, Marriott lived in Greenwich and is listed in 1939 as an Assistant Superintendent Marine Engineer. He was a member of the Freemasons and married Eleanor V. Brooker in 1927.
