British War Medal 1914-18

Awarded to Charles Arthur Marriott (1892-1980). Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18': Engraved on the edge: 'ENGR. C.A.MARRIOTT, M.F.A.' Fitted with a bar and orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes. In original card box of issue numbered ZBA8031 (with MED1673).

Charles Arthur Marriott was born in Ilford, London. During World War I, he worked for the General Steam Navigation Company, London as an engineer in 'Albatross', 'Redstart', 'Mallard' and 'Laverock'. Before he joined 'Leeuwarden', she was sunk by 'U-28' on 17 March 1915 - her crew survived. After the war, Marriott lived in Greenwich and is listed in 1939 as an Assistant Superintendent Marine Engineer. He was a member of the Freemasons and married Eleanor V. Brooker in 1927.
