Mercantile Marine War medal, 1914-1918

Awarded to Charles Arthur Marriott (1892-1980). Obverse: Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN:REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: Within a laurel garland in relief, the bow view of a drifter, a ship in the distance (right).Exergue: 'FOR WAR SERVICE MERCANTILE MARINE 1914-1918'. Inscription on edge: 'CHARLES A.MARRIOTT'. Fitted with a bar and light green and scarlet watered silk ribbon divided by a narrow white stripe. In original card box of issue with instructions how to wear.

Charles Arthur Marriott was born in Ilford, London. During World War I, he worked for the General Steam Navigation Company, London as an engineer in 'Albatross', 'Redstart', 'Mallard' and 'Laverock'. Before he joined 'Leeuwarden', she was sunk by 'U-28' on 17 March 1915 - her crew survived. After the war, Marriott lived in Greenwich and is listed in 1939 as an Assistant Superintendent Marine Engineer. He was a member of the Freemasons and married Eleanor V. Brooker in 1927.
