Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Marine Medal 1874

Presented to Capt Edward William Freeman. Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LORD SAVE US WE PERISH'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath a 'Liver' Bird with an olive branch in its beak. (The crest of Liverpool). Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Inscription on edge: 'CAPT. EDWD. FREEMAN. S.S.RODDAM FOR GALLANTLY TAKING HIS SHIP FROM ST. PIERRE ANCHORAGE MARTINIQUE DURING THE ERUPTION OF MT. PELLE 9/5/1902'. Inscription on bar: 'FOR SAVING LIFE OCTR 6 1883'. Suspended from a blue ribbon fitted with an engraved bar & a pin buckle. In fitted case of issue. It was presented to Edward William Freeman (1864-1952) Captain of SS 'Roddam', Steel, Young and Co. trading between London and the West Indies. He survived the eruption of Mount Pelee on Martinique on 8th May 1902 and got his vessel out of harbour at St Pierre and back to St Lucia.
