Lloyds Medal for Meritorious Services 1900-1913
Presented to Captain Edward William Freeman. Obverse: Entwined by a wreath of roses an oval shield with the arms of Lloyd's. Reverse: Inscription on scroll 'TO CAPTAIN E.W.FREEMAN'. Inscription: 'PRESENTED BY LLOYD'S FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICES'. Inscription on edge: "888". Suspended by a double dolphin clasp from a blue ribbon with a broad white stripe near each end. In fitted case of issue.
The Lloyd's Medal for Meritorious services was awarded for actions that averted damage to or loss of, vessels and their cargo. It was presented to Edward William Freeman (1864-1952) Captain of SS 'Roddam', Steel, Young and Co. trading between London and the West Indies. He survived the eruption of Mount Pelee on Martinique on 8th May 1902 and got his vessel out of harbour at St Pierre and back to St Lucia.
