1914-15 Star
Awarded to telegraphist Joseph Henry Revill RN (1899-1945). A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.'. An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G'. with a 'V' within it. Inscription Reverse: '38868 J.H.REVILL, B. TEL. R.N.' Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon. Mounted on a bar with six others.
Joseph Henry Revill was born in Sheffield and entered the Royal Navy in 1915. He served in HMS 'Galatea' throughout the war as a telegraphist from 1 May 1917. 'Galatea' was the flagship of the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron and took part in the Battle of Jutland. He continued his naval service between the wars, being briefly pensioned before being recalled again in 1939. He served in the aircraft carrier HMS 'Illustrious' from her commissioning in 1940. The ship was deployed to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean and Revill was on board during the Battle of Taranto. Revill was invalided in June 1943 following the return of 'Illustrious' to the United Kingdom. He died in Edinburgh where his wife Margaret was resident, two years later. He held the final rank of Leading Telegraphist.
