Victory Medal 1914-18
Awarded to telegraphist Joseph Henry Revill RN (1899-1945). Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION. 1914-1919'. Inscription on edge: 'J.38868 J.H.REVILL, TEL.R.N.' Fitted with a ring and watered silk ribbon of rainbow hues.
Joseph Henry Revill was born in Sheffield and entered the Royal Navy in 1915. He served in HMS 'Galatea' throughout the war as a telegraphist from 1 May 1917. 'Galatea' was the flagship of the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron and took part in the Battle of Jutland. He continued his naval service between the wars, being briefly pensioned before being recalled again in 1939. He served in the aircraft carrier HMS 'Illustrious' from her commissioning in 1940. The ship was deployed to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean and Revill was on board during the Battle of Taranto. Revill was invalided in June 1943 following the return of 'Illustrious' to the United Kingdom. He died in Edinburgh where his wife Margaret was resident, two years later. He held the final rank of Leading Telegraphist.
