Forward end of the first class lounge on the 'Aquitania' (1914)
Interior of the passenger liner 'Aquitania' (1914) showing the forward end of the First Class Lounge, also called Palladian Lounge, on the Promenade Deck (A Deck), prior to completion of the fitting-out work. Chalk marks indicating the positions of furniture are visible.
The Baroque-style interior decoration was carried out by Lenygon & Co Ltd, London. The spandrels on each side of the arches are copies after Jean Baptiste Van Loo’s ‘Four Elements’. The lunettes above the cornice may have been inspired by the work of the 17th-century metalworker Jean Tijou, one of the most gifted ironworkers of his age. The allegorical painting on the ceiling is said to be an original 18th-century Dutch picture and the carvings were inspired by those of the Dutch wood carver Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721).
