British War Medal 1914-18
Awarded to Frederick Albert Philpott MN. Obverse:Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18': Engraved on the edge: 'FREDERICK A. PHILPOTT.' Fitted with a bar and orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes. Mounted on a safety pin with one other as worn.
Frederick Albert Philpott was born in Blean, Whitstable In 1855, the son of Stephen Philpott a mariner. In 1877 he was an able seaman on 'Venus' of Faversham and in 1901, a seaman on the packet boat SS 'Boulogne'. His First World War Mercantile Marine War Medal was issued to an address in Folkestone. He was still resident in Folkestone, now retired, in 1939. He seems to have died in Somerset in 1941.
He married Emily May Clothier in 1874.
