Ticket to Lord Nelson's funeral
Ticket to the funeral of Lord Nelson 9 January 1806. The ticket bears the wax seal of the Bishop of London and the ticket is signed by the Bishop of Lincoln (Dean of St Paul’s) George Pretyman Tomline (1750-1824). Inscribed: 'ADMIT THE BEARER AT THE SOUTH DOOR' [signature] 'G Lincoln', 'Dean. This Ticket not to be delivered to any Doorkeeper'.
After Nelson's body had lain in state at the Royal Naval hospital, it was carried in procession down the River Thames to St. Paul's Cathedral for the funeral ceremony. The service lasted some four hours and at the end the coffin was lowered into the crypt, draped with the ensign of HMS 'Victory'.
