Ticket to admit John Hoppner RA into the funeral procession from the Admiralty to St Paul’s Cathedral, 9 January 1806
An example of a ticket for Nelson’s state funeral on 9 January 1806. John Hoppner RA (1758–1810) was a portrait painter. His court connections earned him prestigious sitters, including Nelson. Hoppner would have been able to join the funeral procession as it gathered in Hyde Park. From here the cortege made its way to St Paul’s, where the holder of the ticket, REL0143, would already have been seated. The ticket has been signed by Sir Isaac Heard (1730-1820) Garter Principal King of Arms.
