War Medal 1939-45
Awarded to Captain Wilfred James Cameron Robertson RN (1902-51). Obverse: head of King George VI. Legend: 'GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX : F : D : INDIAE : IMP'. Reverse: A lion standing (left) on a prostrate dragon, its right paw resting on the latter's head. Inscription above: '1939 1945'. Fitted with a bar and blue ribbon with wide red borders and a narrow central red stripe with white borders. Bronze oak leaf for mention-in-despatches. Mounted on a bar with five others.
Robertson was born in Calcutta. He joined the Royal Navy on 15 January 1916 but was not commissioned lieutenant until after the end of the war on 15 June 1924. He held the final rank of Captain from 30 June 1942, and retired on 31 March 1951 shortly before his death. Robertson was Operations Officer on HMS 'King George V' during the pursuit of 'Bismarck' in May 1941.
