1914-15 Star

Awarded to Herbert Walter Ellwood (1878-1918). A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G'. with a 'V' within it. Inscription Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon.

Herbert Walter Ellwood was born in Langham, Norfolk the son of a railway worker. He joined the Royal Navy on 15 April 1896 for twelve years, serving as a stoker. He married Clara Maria Massingham on 17 May 1905 in Langham and they had one daughter Ellen Edith. He transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve but returned to active service during the First World War. He died when HM tug 'Desire' was sunk by U-boat 'U34' off Filey, on 24 Jan 1918.
