Victory Medal 1914-18
Awarded to Herbert Walter Ellwood (1878-1918). Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION. 1914-1919'. Inscription on edge: '182002 H.W. ELLWOOD. STO.1.R.N.' Fitted with a ring and watered silk ribbon of rainbow hues.
Herbert Walter Ellwood was born in Langham, Norfolk the son of a railway worker. He joined the Royal Navy on 15 April 1896 for twelve years, serving as a stoker. He married Clara Maria Massingham on 17 May 1905 in Langham and they had one daughter Ellen Edith. He transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve but returned to active service during the First World War. He died when HM tug 'Desire' was sunk by U-boat 'U34' off Filey, on 24 Jan 1918.
