1939-45 Star
Awarded to Percy Stanley Inge (1892-1973). A six pointed star, uniface, surmounted by a circular band crowned containing within it the Royal monogram 'G.R.I. VI'. Legend: 'THE 1939-1945 STAR'. Fitted with a ring and ribbon of equal stripes of pale blue, scarlet and dark blue. Mounted on a bar with six others.
Percy Stanley Inge was born at Faversham, the son of Henry Murton Inge, a sailing barge master. His naval service began on 22 July 1908, being employed on shore with a reduced pension from 1922. He was re-employed during World War II with the rank of Petty Officer.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for services during the operations against Zeebrugge and Ostend on the night of the 22-23 April 1918. HMS ‘Intrepid’, ‘Thetis’ and ‘Iphigenia’ were stripped and filled with concrete to act as blockships across the mouth of the canal. On completion of this operation the crew from these vessels got into the boats and were duly picked up by other vessels under heavy fire. Petty Officer Inge served on board HMS ‘Intrepid’.
Inge married Elsie Isobel Shaw on 12 December 1921 in Malvern, Worcestershire and died in Gloucester.
