Royal Humane Society Medal 1774-1869
Awarded to Rear Adm Sherard Osborn (1822-1875). Obverse: A nude boy with short cloak flying out from his shoulder, blowing on a torch held in his right hand. Legend: 'LATEAT SCINTILLVLA FORSAN'. Exergue: 'SOC . LOND . IN . RESVSCITAT . INTERMORTVORVM INSTIT . MDCCLXXIV'. Within an oak garland tied with ribbon, name of recipient and inscription.Reverse: Legend: 'HOC PRETIVM CIVE SERVATO TVLIT'. Inscription: 'VIT . OB SERV D . D . SOC . REG . HVM'. [reverse to be checked]. On 20th October 1848, while HMS 'Dwarf' was fitting out in the basin of Portsmouth Dockyard, 2nd class boy William Mustrell fell overbord in 27 foot deep water. Osborn jumped overboard in full uniform, including sword, and succeeded in saving him.
