India General Service Medal 1854-95
Awarded to Thomas Barnardiston. Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria with a diadem, hair tied in a knot (left). Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA'. Reverse: Winged Victory standing (left) crowning with a wreath a seated warrior (right). Suspended from a cusped bar and ribbon of three scarlet and two blue stripes. Bar: 'PEGU'. Inscr. on edge, 'THOS. BARNARDISTON. ACTG. MATE 'WINCHESTER". Mounted on a bar with two others.
From 26 March 1853 to 5 April 1853 Barnardiston was mate in HMS ‘Winchester’ - Flagship on the China and East Indies Station. He was gazetted after an action with Burmese forces at Danybyu during the second Burmese War. This was a land attack on a well-defended stockade in which the British Commander, Granville Gower Loch was mortally wounded. He had been in command of a naval brigade of 185 seamen, 62 marines and 25 officers from ’Winchester’, ‘Fox’ and ’Sphinx’ who were beaten back by the Burmese and had to retreat.
