Distinguished Service Order 1910-36

Distinguished Service Order awarded to Captain Kenneth Allan Ferrers Guy (1883-1942). The citation in the ‘London Gazette’ 11 November 1919 reads, ‘For distinguished service in command of the ‘Emile Nobel’ in action off Fort Alexandrovsk on 21 May 1919’.
The Times Nov 29 1921 'A spirited little affair in which the British flotilla under Commodore D T Norris in the Caspian Sea won considerable renown in May1919, is recalled by the Admiralty announcement of the award of prize bounty. The bounty, which is now ready for distribution.....is granted to HM ships 'Krugel', 'Venturi', 'Asia', 'Windsor Castle' and 'Emilie Nobel' together with certain airmen from the airplane carrier 'Alader Yousanoff' for the destruction of eight Bolshevist armed vessels at Alexandrovsk. At this place the main part of the Bolshevist force, including five armed merchantmen, eight destroyers, 14 small armed motor boats and two gun boats were assembled and after and aerial reconnaissance and bombing raid Commodore Norris's flotilla made a determined attack, pressing on up the harbour under a heavy fire. In addition to the eight vessels destroyed others were injured or rendered immobile from want of oil. The affair definitely curbed the Bolshevist naval power in the Caspian'.
The 'Alader Yousanoff' was a Russian merchant vessel (2071 grt) converted to a seaplane carrier armed with one 12 pdr gun.

The medal is an enamelled white cross edged in gold with a green central wreath containing the Imperial Crown in gold on a red background. On the reverse is the Royal Cypher within a green wreath on a red background. The ribbon has a wide central stripe of red edged with narrower stripes of blue.
