Board of Trade Sea Gallantry Medal 1911-1936
Awarded to Frank Roberts. Obverse: Head of George V (left). Below bust 'G.R.I.' Legend: 'GEORGIVS V D . G. BRITT : OMN : REX F . D . IND . IMP .' Reverse: Three men, one of whom is signalling to a rescuing life-boat in the distance and a woman with a baby, on a raft and a broken spar in a stormy sea. Inscription within an oak wreath tied with a bow, surmounted by a royal crown. Inscription: 'FROM THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'. Legend: 'BOARD OF TRADE. FOR GALLANTRY AND HUMANITY'. Inscription on edge: 'FRANK ROBERTS 'ANTONOE' 25-28 January 1926'. Fitted with a cusped bar and scarlet ribbon with narrow stripe near each edge and a pin brooch.
'Antinoe', (Egypt & Levant steamship Co.) left New York bound for Queenstown laden with grain.,She encountered heavy seas in the Atlantic, sustained damage and took on water. an S.O.S. wireless signal was picked up by 'Aquitainia' and 'President Roosevelt'. The latter ship was nearer and went to her aid, arriving on the 25th January 1926. She launched a boat with a crew of eight which capsized with a loss of two men. On the evening of the following day, having failed to get a line to 'Antinoe', a second boat was launched and took off the 23 hands and the master in three journeys.
