HMS 'Encounter', a screw corvette under the command of Richard Bradshaw, was based at Cape Coast Castle (in present-day Ghana) from late 1873. They participated in a punitive expedition on the town of Shama which controlled the mouth of the River Pra and was hostile to the British. On 24 December, boats from the 'Encounter' and 'Merlin', ferried a force of local people from Komenda (allied to the British) across the river to attack the town which they burned. A local man, Sergeant Hughes of the Cape Coast Volunteers, coordinated the attack. Bradshaw also bombarded and burned a village on Aboadi Point where the Shama men had congregated and returned to Cape Coast Castle before the main British advance on Kumasi.
