Board of Trade Sea Gallantry Medal 1911-1936

Awarded to Admiral Sir Max Kennedy Horton (1883-1951). Obverse: Head of George V (left). Below bust: 'G . R . I .' Legend: 'FOR GALLANTRY IN SAVING LIFE AT SEA'. Reverse: Three men, one of whom is signalling to a rescuing life-boat in the distance and a woman with a baby, on a raft and a broken spar in a stormy sea. Inscription on edge: 'LIEUT. MAX. K. HORTON R.N. DELHI 13 DEC.1911'. Fitted with a cusped bar and scarlet ribbon with narrow stripe near each edge and a pin brooch.

While serving in HMS ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ Max Kennedy Horton (1883-1951) participated in the evacuation of passengers from the P & O liner ‘Delhi’ which had run aground off Cape Spartel, Morocco. HMS ‘London’ and the French cruiser ‘Friant’ also sent boats to aid the stricken vessel - they were assisted by the Gibraltar lifeboat. The rescue took five days in bad weather.
