Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Royal Navy 1910-1930

Awarded to Able Seaman Robert John Squires DSM (1883-1959). Obverse: Bust of King George V in naval uniform, orders and medals (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP'. Reverse: Within a knotted rope starboard broadside view of a ship of the line at anchor. Legend: 'FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT'. Inscription on edge: '215816, R.J. SQUIRES, A.B., R.N.' Suspended from a clasp and dark blue ribbon edged with white. Mounted on a bar with four others.

Robert John Squires was born in Swanage, Dorset and joined the Royal Navy, signing up for twelve years’ service in 1901. He was an Able Seaman during the First World War in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, notably in minelayer R.F.A. 'Princess Margaret', and was awarded the Distinguished Service medal for his service on this ship. He ended his naval service on HMS 'Malaya' until 1924 and was pensioned from 1926. He returned to Swanage and in 1939 was working as a chauffeur and gardener (his father had been a gardener and seedsman). He died in Poole.
