Coronation medal, George VI 1937
Awarded to the Venerable Archdeacon Charles William Chamberlayne Ingles, Chaplain of the Fleet (1869-1954). Obverse: Busts of their Majesties, crowned (left). Reverse: Royal cypher 'GRI',. Legend: 'GEORGE VI QUEEN ELIZABETH'. Inscription: 'CROWNED 12 MAY 1937'. Mounted on a bar with MED2633.
Charles Ingles was born in Blackheath, the son of John Ingles, Deputy Inspector of Hospitals and Fleets in the Royal Navy. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, ordained in 1892 and then held a curacy at St Matthew, Exeter. In 1896 he joined the Royal Navy, serving as a chaplain for the next ten years in the ‘Collingwood’ and other ships. In 1906 he moved ashore as chaplain to the Royal Naval Barracks. During World War 1, he acted as chaplain to the Royal Marine Depot, Deal for the first three years of the war then in 1917 he was made Archdeacon and Chaplain of the Fleet, awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1918. In 1923 he was among the Honorary Chaplains to the King and in 1924, he retired from the service and became Rector of Cheddon Fitzpaine from 1924-32.
Ingles married Marianne Clare Bailey in Southampton in 1900. They had no children.
