Badge and star: Order of the Cloud and Banner, 1st class
Awarded to Adm-Fleet Lord Cunningham of Hyndhope. Badge; A chipped gilt star of forty rays grouped into fives to give eight main points. Superimposed on this, a silver star of eight points, enamelled white, placed 22 1/2 degrees out of line with it, having on each of its topmost three points a small red-enamelled five pointed star. On the white star, a yellow enamelled one of eight main points (each devided in seven). In the centre of the yellow star, a circular blue boss with a red edge bearing a Chinese war banner in yellow on a gold staff, with clouds in the background. Badge suspended by a ring from a gilt five-pointed star with a gilt ball at each tip and a purple ribbon with a white edge. Reverse is the same as the obverse. Star: the same but convex. No suspension star.
Both English and Chinese sources state that the ‘Order of the Cloud and Banner’ was established on 15 June 1935 as an award of valor for acts of exceptional bravery by members of the Chinese Armed Forces, and that it comes in nine classes and can be awarded to foreigners.
