Cunningham commanded the destroyer HMS ‘Scorpion’ throughout World War I. in 1914, he was involved in shadowing the German warships ‘Goeben’ and ‘Breslau’. He was promoted to Commander and awarded the Distinguished Service Order following ‘Scorpion’s’ participation in the attack on the Dardanelles in 1915. Cunningham remained in the Mediterranean protecting convoys until ‘Scorpion’ was paid off on 21 January 1918. He spent the end of the was in HMS ‘Termagant’ as part of the Dover Patrol and was awarded another bar to his DSO.
