Terrestrial facsimile globe gores
Terrestrial facsimile globe gores. They form a set with GLB0071 and GLB0269, but the copies described here are not exact reproductions of the original. The gores were reproduced by Rand McNally & Company at reduced scale, from the facsimile reproduction of a Behaim globe by E.G. Ravenstein. Geographical details on the gores are the same as Behaim GLB0253. There are numerous symbols, for example cities and mountain ridges, huts for local inhabitants and flags with coats of arms, animals and ships. The map represents the world as it was known before 1492. Along the latitude scale there are explanations for the length of day for various latitudes and the astrological symbols for the planets. A total of six oceans are named. For full details about the cartography and construction of these gores please refer to the related publication, Globes at Greenwich.
