Celestial globe gores
Celestial globe gores. Astronomical details on the gores are the same as Bale GLB0255. There is a magnitude table in a rectangular cartouche, to the right of Perseus. The Milky Way is drawn but not labelled. In Capricorn and Taurus Poniatowski, there are labels for a planetary nebula. A total of 59 stars and two star groups are named; the 48 Ptolemaic constellations and four of the non-Ptolemaic constellations are also drawn. Five of the southern constellations are indicated as well as six of Plancius, those of Hevelius, except Triangulum Minus and those of Lacaille, except Mensa. Bale GLB0186 is the copper plate from which this set of gores was printed. For full details about the cartography and construction of these gores please refer to the related publication, Globes at Greenwich.
