Silver cased pocket watch by S. Smith & Sons commemorating the Siege of Ladysmith, 1899. The inscription reads: 'Siege of Ladysmith HMS ‘Powerful’ 118 days 1899-1900 S. Evans AB'.

The watch has a keyless three quarter plate, gilt brass going barrel movement with club-tooth lever escapement and compensation balance; the balance spring with overcoil. The upper plate of the movement is signed: ‘SWISS MADE S. Smith & Son, 9 Strand LONDON WATCHMAKERS TO THE ADMIRALTY’.

It has a white enamel dial with roman numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic ten second figures. The dial is signed as the movement, but also with ‘55-178’ within the seconds dial.

The watch has a silver full-hunter case with nickel joints, and has the cover stamped inside with the Swiss assay mark (two rampant bears) and ‘0.935’ (assay quality) and ‘348’. The back and dome are similarly marked inside but with ‘1007348’.
