A telescope barrel and telescope objective lens from two different telescopes
These two parts from different telescopes are relics of Sir John Franklin's last expedition in search of the North-West Passage, 1845-48.
AAA2227.1 and AAA2227.3: The brass barrel draw tube of a marine telescope, which is severely crushed, has some remaining pieces of cord and leather at the eyepiece end, recovered by Lt. Schwatka's expedition, 1879-1880.
AAA2227.2: The objective lens assembly is made of silvered brass and has a sliding sun shade but no surviving lens cap. It was found near Ross Cairn, Point Victory, King William Island on 2nd June 1859 by the McClintock Search Expedition 1857-59. There would have been a draw tube, but this is now missing. It may have been one of the items obtained by the Schwatka expedition from Inuit on the Hayes River in May 1879, see AAA2227.1 and .3
