Knife
A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-8. A table knife, the ivory handle marked 'DN' or 'DW', obtained from the Inuit at Shepherd Bay on 17 May 1869 by the Hall Search Expedition 1864-9. A suspension hole has been drilled through the handle. A Royal Naval Museum number (10) is painted in white on the blade. None of Franklin's crews had the initials 'DW' or 'DN'..
A manuscript by R. J Cyriax based on Hall's notes says that this item was among those obtained at Shepherd Bay.
The item was presented to the Royal Naval Museum, Greenwich in 1892 by Miss Sophia Cracroft. It was displayed in the Franklin Room, case 4, number 10. The catalogue says that it was brought from Pelly Bay.
Inscribed on the blade: F. West St James street
