The Right Honorable Lord Viscount Duncan Admiral of the Blue Squadron

An oval bust-length portrait of Adam Duncan (1731–1804) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1795–1812. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘The Right Honourable Lord Viscount Duncan. Admiral of the Blue Squadron.’ Also lettered with the production details and the publication line, ‘J. S. Copley RA Pinx. / Ridley sculpt. / Publish’d by Bunney & Gol Lonodn. Sep. 1 1800.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley after John Singleton Copley’s three-quarter-length oil painting of 1798, now in National Galleries Scotland. Copley’s portrait was a preparatory study for his history painting of ‘The Surrender of the Dutch Admiral de Winter to Admiral Duncan at the Battle of Camperdown’ (1799). The print was published by Joyce Gold and John Bunney as an illustration in volume 4 of the ‘Naval Chronicle’ (July–December 1800) opposite page 81, together with ‘Biographical Memoirs of the Right Honourable Adam Duncan, Lord Viscount Duncan, Knight of the Imperial Russian Order of St. Alexander Nevski, an Admiral of the Blue Squadon’ (pp. 81–113).
