Rt. Honble Richd Earl Howe K G
An oval bust-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘Rt. Honble. Richd. Earl Howe K.G.’ Also lettered with the production details and the publication line, ‘Ridley sculp. / Pubd. by J. Gold 103 Shoe Lane May 31 1803.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley. The print was published by Joyce Gold as an illustration in volume 9 of the ‘Naval Chronicle’ (January–June 1803), opposite page 396. According to the list of plates in the Naval Chronicle, Ridley’s engraving is “from an original painting” – perhaps John Singleton Copley’s John Singleton Copley’s bust-length oil painting of around 1790, a version of which is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2790).
