Portrait of the ‘Dolfijn’
The ‘Dolfijn’, 84-guns, was built in 1667 and belonged to the Admiralty of Amsterdam. She is last mentioned in 1686 and was also known as the ‘Gouden Dolfijn’.
This is an unsigned offset by the Elder, worked up with pencil and wash. The drawing is inscribed ‘de dolthijn’.
This work is in the same manner as PAI7263, but not so well finished. It was probably used for the painting in Buckingham Palace (no. 176). In the Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, there is a drawing of the ‘Dolfijn’ viewed from the port quarter (68-305).
