A Dutch ship at anchor off the land
The ship, depicted at anchor in the left foreground, is the same one as in PAJ2431. All her sails are furled except the mizzen topsail which is loosed and the fore is clewed up. Her hull is mostly in shadow and in silhouette against the sky. There is a kaag passing close to her and several small vessels around her. In the right distance a harbour is pictured.
This is one of four large drawings, by the Younger, rapidly drawn in graphite and light wash, with a signature that was probably added much later. The drawing is signed in brown ink by the Younger ‘W.V.V.J’. It has been approximately dated by the watermark.
