Whip handle

A possible relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-8. A horn whip handle with an ivory inset at the end. The handle has a hole bored through it to which a silk cord is attached. The finder was reputedly William Forder. Forder was a gunner's mate on 'Phoenix' in 1853 and acting gunner 3rd class in 1854 on the same ship. Forder took part in a travelling expedition with Inglefield 10-17 August 1853. The item is more likely to have belonged to him rather than being associated with the Franklin expedition. HMS 'Phoenix' accompanied by a supply ship was sent to carry stores and despatches to Belcher's search expedition. She arrived at Beechey Island in August 1853 and proceeded some way up Wellington Channel until her passage was blocked by ice. A party proceeded on foot and deposited a message at Cape Rescue for 'North Star' beset further north. 'Phoenix' made a second voyage to Beechey Island, again with despatches and supplies arriving in August 1854.
