The Battle of Vuelta de Obligado, 20 November 1845

Inscribed: “The action of the Punta Obligado, between the combined French and English squadrons, under the command of Captains Hotham and Tréhouart. Dedicated to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty.”

The Battle of Vuelta de Obligado took place on the waters of the Paraná River on 20 November 1845, between the Argentine Confederation, under the leadership of Juan Manuel de Rosas, and a combined Anglo-French fleet.

The eleven European warships and two boats – their names and commanding officers inscribed below – are shown in various positions from extreme left, subjecting the Argentine chain line, at extreme right, to heavy fire. 'Firebrand' is shown first on the left and 'Fulton' last on the right of the allied vessels depicted.
