Portrait of a Dutch Frigate

A Dutch frigate viewed from before the starboard beam. The masts and sails are roughly sketched in; the fore course is shown clewed up and loosed, and the main topsail lowered on the cap and set.

This is an unsigned offset with pencil by the Elder, not rubbed on the back. It has no working on the hull except on the head (the structure extending forward from the bows to the figurehead). The sails, which are added in graphite, differ from the offset. It has been approximately dated by the style.
