The Dutch Fleet at anchor near the coast
The Dutch Fleet at anchor near the coast. The drawings belong to a group identified by their subjects and watermarks as dating from when van de Velde was with the Dutch fleet assembled near Goeree in South Holland in Autumn 1664.
The most important in the series are in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam. To the left of the centre there is a stern view of a private ship with a boat pulling away from her to port, and beyond there are two flagships firing salutes. In the right middle distance the vice-admiral of the centre squadron is saluting, and beyond her is the commander-in-chief. In the distance on the left there is a church tower and a village.
