Volume of four plates 'Commemoration of the Four Great Naval Victories obtained by the English during the late War ... in Emblematical Engravings ... 1803
A bound volume with hard covers, containing four prints and accompanying texts. The four prints were designed by Robert Smirke and published by Robert Bowyer to commemorate the major British naval victories of the 1790s: the Glorious First of June (1 June 1794), Cape St Vincent (14 February 1797), Camperdown (11 October 1797) and the Nile (1–3 August 1798). They were published as a set under the title of the ‘Commemoration of the Four Great Victories’. All four prints followed the same format, combining an allegorical composition with portrait medallions of the flag officers and captains of the victorious fleets. Multiple engravers worked on the prints. (Updated April 2019).
