Plaque
A resin imitation (rather than a reproduction) of a whalebone pan bone plaque. It is inscribed on the reverse 'Whaler Topaz off Marquesas Is, Jan 1840' and signed 'James Allen' The initials 'J.A.' are on the front lower left corner. The piece is moulded with two whale ships off a rocky coast with three boats pursuing a pod of sperm whales. The edge is decorated with a zigzag pattern. The reverse has been given a honeycomb appearance.
It is a convincing example of the imitation scrimshaw produced in considerable quantities from the 1960s onwards.
