Pistol

Sea Service flintlock pistol. The walnut stock is fully stocked to muzzle and it is fitted with a brass trigger guard and a butt cap. A single ramrod pipe is fitted with a wooden ramrod which has a brass tip. The trigger is made of steel with a slight backward curl. The pistol has a brass sideplate, a steel belt hook and a flintlock lock. The barrel is circular and smoothbore. The calibre is 0.56in. The pistol is inscribed on the lockplate with the word 'TOWER' and is also decorated with a Georgian crown over the letters 'GR'. There are proof marks on the barrel and the belt of the pistol.

The pistol is an example of the third model Sea Service pistols introduced in 1790. This model retained the 12in. barrel of earlier pistols but the lock, wood and barrel are of a better finish. This last model saw extensive use during the Napoléonic Wars.
