Pistol

Flintlock pistol. The stock is probably walnut, fully stocked and fitted with a simple brass butt cap with fairly long spurs. There is a long brass trigger guard with an acorn finial at each end. Two brass ramrod pipes secure a wooden ramrod. A thin strip of brass strengthens the fore-end. There is an ornamental brass side-plate with two cheese-ended steel side nails. There is a brass escutcheon on top of the butt. The pistol is sidelock, flintlock exhibiting traditional Spanish features. There is a large square-jawed cock with ring at top which is similar to the Madrid lock save for the absence of a hook at the back of the cock. The pistol has a powerful mainspring and apparently no half cock. The barrel is iron, octagonal at the breech changing to circular. The calibre is 0.725in. The pistol is inscribed with a number of marks on the lockplate mostly obscured including a crown over date and crown over 'A' and 'ZA'. The barrel is inscribed with a crown over 'R' and date. The sideplate is inscribed 'Santissima Trinidada 21st Octr 1805' presumably to indicate that this pistol was picked up at Tralagar from that ship. The 'Santissima Trinidad' took part in the battle of Trafalgar. She was a three decker built at Havana in 1769 and rebuilt in 1795. She was dismasted during an engagement with HMS 'Neptune' and sank after the battle.
