HMS 'Lion', 'Princess Royal' and 'New Zealand' in 1916-17
Signed and dated by the artist, lower left, 'A.B. Cull 24'. Though a little damaged this is a fine example of Cull's watercolour work and a reasonably accurate image of the ships - all battlecruisers- with the 'Lion' leading the 'Princess Royal', and the 'New Zealand' off to port of them (i.e. viewer's right). The date represented is either June to November 1916 or June to September 1917 as the 'Lion' is flying a vice-admiral's flag at the foremast. From April to November 1916 Vice-Admiral David Beatty was on board ('Lion' being his flagship at Jutland on 31 May): he was replaced by Rear-Admiral Pakenham on 29 November 1916, who did not become a vice-admiral until 18 June 1917. The 'Lion' is shown after her torpedo nets were removed in June 1916 (i.e. after Jutland) and before the enlargement of her control top in September 1917. It is perhaps more likely that the drawing commemorates Beatty's connection with her than Pakenham's, but that is only a probability.
