Passenger/cargo vessel; Service vessel; Small craft; Deal galley punt
Scale: 1:12. Plank on frame model of a Deal galley punt (circa 1900). At this scale the model depicts a second-class punt measuring 26 feet in length by 9 1/2 feet in the beam. It is rigged with a large single, almost square dipping lug sail, mounted just forward of amidships, as well as a small standing lug on the mizzen clamped to the transom and sheeted with a bumpkin astern. It is also equipped with an anchor and three oars, since these boats were also rowed with the crew standing to their oars.
The galley punts were used for a variety of jobs, in particular ‘hovelling’, which could be anything from carrying messages and passengers to providing assistance to vessels in trouble on the Goodwin Sands.
