Submarine cable with presentation case

Presentation case containing ten pieces of submarine cable, from the Suez Canal, circa 1879. Five lengths of cable marked 'A B B1 D E' and 'TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTAINANCE COMPY LIMITED' with five equivalent cross sections, in a glazed, maple-veneered case. The accompanying metal label reads 'EASTERN TELEGRAPH CO LTD/SUEZ-ADEN (TRIPLICATE CABLE) 1883/Nautical Miles/Type A. 10, Type E. 105, Type B. 105, Type B1. 315, Type D. 965/Total 1500/CONTRACTORS TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTAINANCE COMPANY LONDON'. All the cables have a core of copper wires, surrounded by rubber and steel wires. B & D with 12 and 14 steel wires respectively, the rest with ten.
