White earthenware jug, printed with black stipple transfers showing a starboard-broadside view of a cutter yacht inscribed 'THISTLE' and a port-broadside view of a similar yacht inscribed 'VOLUNTEER'.
The jug has a moulded rim and is marked on the bottom 'S.P.Co' within a garter belt and stamped 'U'. 'Thistle' 1887 and 'Volunteer' 1887 were respectively the British and American contenders for the 1887 America's Cup which 'Volunteer' won.
